Agnus Dei (Canticle 20)

Lord Jesus Christ, Lamb of God,
You take away the sin of the world:
Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
You are seated at the right hand of the Father:
Receive our prayer.

For You alone are Lord Most High,
The Holy One, our heav’nly King.
We worship You, we give You thanks,
We praise You for Your glory.

You alone are Lord Most High,
The Holy One, our heav’nly King.
We worship You, we give You thanks,
We praise You for Your glory.
Almighty God and Father. Amen.

Commentary -

The text for this setting of Agnus Dei is based on the ancient hymn text, Gloria in excelsis (“Glory to God in the highest”), commonly known as “Canticle 20: Glory to God” or the “Greater Doxology.” The longer text has been sung or prayed in worship throughout the church age, dating back at least to the early fourth century. This setting was composed for Ascension Sunday, 2010, as a sung prayer during confession. It can also be integrated into a worship set of songs and hymns that focus on Christ as the Lamb of God, or as sovereign Lord of the universe. A quick look through a catalog of settings of the Agnus Dei text will reveal that most are composed in minor keys. This setting is intentionally different; it takes the key of A major for its traditional association with the sentiment of trust in God. But listen for the ways the mystery of the text is highlighted in the first section by moving in and out of the key, then solidly in the key for the declaration “You alone are Lord Most High!”

Key: A major

Liturgical year season: all year, but it is especially appropriate for times of confession on high days such as Ascension, Palm Sunday, Easter, and Christ the King.

Agnus Dei (Canticle 20) is available as a lead sheet. (Accompaniment for piano or keyboard available by request.)
