Hymn Settings for Worship (Volume 1) is a collection of original settings of classic and beloved hymns of the church. There are many reasons to love the classic hymns of the Church, and many reasons for their reclaiming popularity in the early twenty-first century – beautiful melodies; lovely harmonies; powerful and descriptive language that makes deep theology memorable. The five hymns included in this volume share those characteristics, and an additional, powerful trait: they each declare, in musical form, the whole story of God.
Each of the hymns in this collection is included in lead sheet form and either a vocal parts, piano accompaniment, or keyboard/organ setting. In addition, each hymn is accompanied by an antiphonal congregational reading drawn from the Psalms that reflects the language and images of the hymn.
Hymns that tell the whole of God’s cosmic story extol His creative power, sovereignty and majesty, recount His saving acts and deeds accomplished through the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ, and look forward to the eternal worship of all His redeemed in the consummation and re-creation of all things. This telling of God’s narrative in song makes these hymns fitting for use through most of the liturgical year and in most parts of a worship service. As gathering hymns, they are exultant statements of God’s greatness. As hymns of response, they reassure us of His goodness and faithfulness. When sung during times of giving, they are expressions of gratitude and wonder, and at the Lord’s Table they remind us of Christ’s sacrifice and of our place in His body. And sung as closing hymns, we are sent forth with hope and confidence, ready to walk out our faith in the world with joy, “giving thanks to the Lord with a whole heart and telling of all His wonderful works” (Psalm 9:1).
