Commentary -

“Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that You are the Holy One of God.’”  – John 6:68-69

In the words of this lovely hymn is contained the desire for ever more of the source of true Life, along with the recognition that in our own strength we can never know that Life. The original composer, Philip Bliss, wrote many of the songs and hymns that gave melodic voice to the Revival of the mid-late nineteenth century and that are still well-loved for their timelessness today.

Wonderful Words of Life can be sung with simple accompaniment, such as just a guitar or piano, or with fuller instrumentation. Because of its simple beauty and transparent expressions of worship and submission, it is particularly useful at Confession, Table, or as a call or response to a Profession of Faith. In a worship set of songs, try pairing it with the contemporary-classic, Ancient Words by Lynn DeShazo.
